Probably the most significant change to the program will be the major increase in dosage (time spent in the program). So what made it into the final regulation released yesterday? Here are some highlights: HHS released their proposed standards last summer and New America submitted comments, available here. With the 2007 reauthorization, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) was tasked with updating the Head Start Performance Standards that all Head Start programs must follow. The Head Start participants followed in the Impact Study and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth were in Head Start a long time ago, and since then the program has made positive changes to improve quality.Īnd yesterday, the Obama Administration announced that Head Start is going to see it’s arguably most sweeping overhaul yet. The Head Start program has changed a lot since it was first implemented over 50 years ago. Some Head Start providers might be more effective than others, but overall, these studies show that the program is doing what LBJ intended: giving children in poverty a head start on their future. These studies are further proof that Head Start works. Head Start is often held up as the nation’s original two-generation program because it supports participants and their parents- this study suggests that Head Start could be indirectly benefitting a third generation down the road. To measure these investments, the researchers looked at the frequency of positive parenting practices, such as reading to their child or showing physical affection. They found that Head Start alumni appear to invest more in their own children years later. This study also considered the effect of Head Start on participants’ children. These gains were especially prominent for black participants. The study also shows that Head Start increases students’ self control and positively contributes to participants’ self-esteem. Among Hispanic participants, Head Start participation increased the likelihood of postsecondary credential completion by approximately 15 percentage points. The results show that, compared to siblings who did not attend the program, Head Start participants were more likely to graduate from high school and more likely to have attended college or received a postsecondary degree or certificate. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, a survey that has tracked a multi-generational representative sample since 1979, the study compares Head Start children with their siblings who either went to a different type of pre-K or who did not attend any program. Their new economic analysis extends what we know about the long-term impacts of Head Start even beyond middle school. The second study comes from the Hamilton Project at Brookings. Unfortunately, the study did not show the same positive results in reading scores - the researchers noted that this may be because students’ home environments play a bigger role with reading skills than math skills These students had higher state math test scores and were significantly less likely to repeat a grade or be chronically absent. The study found measurable positive effects for girls, Hispanic students, white students, and students who were eligible for the free and reduced-price lunch program who participated in the CAP program. Georgetown just released a study on Tulsa’s Community Action Project (CAP) Head Start program that finds the positive effects of the program last through the 7th grade. Since the Head Start Impact Study was released in 2010, the program has come under scrutiny because the study found that the modest gains participants made on select school readiness indicators after one year of program participation faded by the end of first and third grade.Įven though other studies have found that Head Start participants experience long-term benefits well beyond third grade, and multiple researchers have dug into the Head Start Impact Study data to figure out what exactly makes some programs more effective than others, critics have been stuck on what they see as disappointing results of the Impact Study.īut two recent studies may further help to change this narrative. Head Start, the nation’s oldest and largest early education program, has been making headlines over the last few weeks- in a good way. According to family lore, Marvel and Lawrence met while she was working at a relative's fruit stand. Marvel Retter was born in Wakefield, Kan., in 1914. That charm must have worked on the woman for whom Marvel Maps was named. “He was like a Frenchman who would kiss your hand - he was just amazing,” Donna Retter said. He did it all while cutting a suave figure. The mapmaker was something of a Renaissance man - relatives said he pursued photography, worked as a chauffeur and served as an executive with the Screen Extras Guild, then a union for background actors. 'Dark hair, mustache, looked like he could’ve been a movie star but he never was.' The map featured only one local point of interest in a desert: Mt. "I think he was - in his own right,” said Donna Retter, a niece. His relatives didn’t know the answer, but they knew this: Lawrence had been a treasure hunter. “He would investigate, did all the artwork,” Retter said.īut a question loomed: Did Lawrence’s treasure map actually lead to a trove? “Dark hair, mustache, looked like he could've been a movie star but he never was,” said Steve Retter, a nephew.īill Retter, another nephew, has a copy of one of Lawrence’s other maps - “Ghost Towns of the Old West” - hanging in his home. He died nearly 50 years ago, but the actor’s relatives could still easily summon gilt-edged memories of him from their teenage years. He hailed from Utahand dreamed of making it in the movies, andeventually carvedout a decades-long career in Tinseltown. Lawrence, I’d soon learn, had been a mapmaker, actor andHollywood executive. In another corner was a man's name: John D. One day in April 2020, I found myself staring at it, lost in the intricacy of the artwork, when something printed on the bottom right corner caught my eye: “Marvel Maps, 1410 North Stanley Avenue.” That was just a few miles from where I lived. Kokoweef.Įnchanted by its suggestion of swashbuckling adventure, I acquired the map in December 2019. Among its points of interest was a lost mine in Texas where Jesuits had hidden silver bullion, an island off Central America that was home to the $60-million “Loot of Lima,” and, of course, the abundant “gold bearing sand” of San Bernardino County’s Mt. Published in 1952, the map highlighted 63 spots. Lawrence and published by his Marvel Maps company in 1952. "The Americana Treasure Map" was created by John D. The tale of that man, his map, and the place it led to is really one about Southern California’s twin mirages - fame and fortune - and the people who seek one or the other. Among them is a surprising figurewhose treasure map would, decades after its publication, jump-start a new adventure in the Mojave Desert. The story of how a handful of 21st century “forty-niners” wound up searching for gold on a singed landscape studded with Joshua trees arcs back nearly 100 years, entangling an eclecticcast of characters. With funding from about 900 investors, he's chasing what he believes is a $1-trillion strike. The miners areled by an 84-year-old who has spent more than half his life looking for the bonanza beneath 6,038-foot Mt. These days, a different mining outfit is trying - on land it leases from a private company that owns the property. But he and his contemporaries never extracted any treasure from the mountain. The notion that there’s a mother lode beneath the California peak, which is about 100 miles northeast of Barstow, was popularized in the 1930s by a miner who claimed to have seen it during a daring, four-day voyage. Kokoweef's tunnels is meant to deter trespassers at the 6,038-foot peak. The Hunter Base in each district will not appear until you’ve completed the associated Hunter Blinds in the district. These are the districts where Hunter Blinds (and eventually Bases) can be found, complete with their location on the map. When you’ve cleared out a base, you’ll download their data and an audio log. Much like the Hunter Blinds, you can use stealth or fight the hunters head on. Additionally, each base will have an added vulnerability that you can exploit or destroy to make clearing the base easier, these will also appear with a scan. You can prevent the deployment of reinforcements by disabling the communication center in each base, which will be highlighted with a marker when you scan the base (Using R3). To complete them, you need to eliminate all of the hunters in the base. Hunter Bases are, in essence, large Hunter Blinds. When all of the hunters are eliminated, you can interface with a bird drone to discover weaknesses, the communication center, and the location of the Hunter Base in the district. This can be done with or without stealth, but the hunters will receive reinforcements if you make your presence known. To complete a Hunter Blind, you simply need to defeat all of the hunters on the rooftop outposts. The first Hunter Blinds and Hunter Base appear after Peter discovers their cloaking technology in the mission “Bad Guys on the Block.” In order to discover the location of the Hunter Base, you first need to clear out all of the Hunter Blinds in the district. This answer is a repeat from 4/10/17 which was also, coincidentally, a Monday. The IGN and the two P’s should have brought PIPING into view, leaving HOT for the finish. I wrote out the letters in a force of habit and was impressed by the 9-letter layout. Since the final solution came instantly upon reading the cartoon sentence, I’ll go ahead and call this one a blind solve. You can take a look at him HERE and decide for yourself if he’s the inspiration behind Jeff’s plumber. The plumber reminds me of Roy Underhill from The Woodwright’s Shop on PBS. There are also some pieces of pipe on the floor beside it that appear to be scraps. Inside it are a few lengths of copper tubing and a pipe cutter. The details within the cartoon were top notch and my favorite was the plumbers toolbox. I’m sure a few of you still have these units as a source of heat, but baseboard and forced hot air in new home construction have made them all but obsolete. This transformed the heaters into decorative pieces that allowed homeowners to add a bit more style to their homes. Based upon this information, I think it’s fair to say that the radiator in today’s piece can be dated the early 1900’s because it had a floral design on its’ loops. This form of central heating is said to have been invented by a Russian businessman named Franz San Galli in 1855, but an American named Joseph Nason had received several patents for hot water and steam heating in 1841 which places San Galli’s claim as the inventor into dispute. Our panel was immediately recognizable as a period piece and the cartoon sentence informs us that a plumber has just finished installing a new radiator. We didn’t have any new words appearing in the puzzle last week so hopefully we’ll get a crack at a few more before we wrap up the 45th week of the year. TOOPH needed a couple of extra glances before coming into view so it’ll be my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day. Even though the 5-letter solutions have been used before, both of the anagrams are coming up as new. Happy Monday, everyone! It was a mix of old and new this morning with David choosing to challenge us with a pair of 5-letter repeats and a pair of 6-letter newcomers. Another doctor told me that everyone is different in how long side effects remain with some patients, he said to try and hang out for a couple of more days. one doctor explained to me that the side effects should of gone and the iron should be starting to making me feel better not worse by now and should get to our emergency room. Halfway through the infusion I got chest pain, I told the nurse and was asked to take my angina spray, that eased the chest pain, then it reappeared 15 minutes later, GTN took care of it again, now I'm getting chest pain 3-4 times a day since the infusion I still felt sick after and I was informed that it all will be short lived, I'm still feeling sick and the chest pains, I have sore /achy knee joints, feels exactly the same as the side effects from Statins, I'm also experiencing the sweats at random times, sometimes profusely and for no reason, Indigestion and intermittent pains in the back, I have spent the last 5 days in bed, no energy and feeling weak, opiate based pain relief is the only thing that relieves the knee and chest pain. I had my first one last week and before procedure it was explained to me what side effects may occur, some did happen but they were short lived by the time the infusion had finished. ?Yes I agree this is the only discussion I could find in regards to iron infusion. New actions can be added to these buttons using the + symbol. On the left side, you see the various buttons available on your controller. You can uncheck mirror mode and press the add skeleton button to access this menu.Īfter you correctly assigned the left and right hands to the controllers you can close this menu and open the Arkio tab to assign the specific buttons for Arkio. We'd first need to add the missing skeletons to the correct left/right controller in the default tab. Then you select the correct controller you like to edit from the "current controller" list and create a new binding. To get started you open the controller binding menu following the first step in the Oculus Guide. You can fix this issue (and help others with the same device) by assigning the correct controllers bindings on Steam VR. If your controllers are not responding correctly in Steam VR and Arkio it might be caused by the controllers not yet being supported. This should fix issues while working with those controllers on SteamVR. To fix the controller mapping for your Oculus controller you can just activate the "Arkio Default Oculus Touch" controller bindings that Johan shared in the community. Here you can select Arkio, this will open a submenu where you can create your bindings or assign new ones from the community. You can find controller bindings by clicking on options>Devices>Controller Settings in the Steam VR dialog. If you are experiencing problems with Steam VR controller bindings you might be missing some headset drivers or using a VR headset that is not (yet) mapped to Arkio's operations.
