I wrote out the letters in a force of habit and was impressed by the 9-letter layout. Since the final solution came instantly upon reading the cartoon sentence, I’ll go ahead and call this one a blind solve. You can take a look at him HERE and decide for yourself if he’s the inspiration behind Jeff’s plumber. The plumber reminds me of Roy Underhill from The Woodwright’s Shop on PBS. There are also some pieces of pipe on the floor beside it that appear to be scraps. Inside it are a few lengths of copper tubing and a pipe cutter. The details within the cartoon were top notch and my favorite was the plumbers toolbox. I’m sure a few of you still have these units as a source of heat, but baseboard and forced hot air in new home construction have made them all but obsolete. This transformed the heaters into decorative pieces that allowed homeowners to add a bit more style to their homes. Based upon this information, I think it’s fair to say that the radiator in today’s piece can be dated the early 1900’s because it had a floral design on its’ loops. This form of central heating is said to have been invented by a Russian businessman named Franz San Galli in 1855, but an American named Joseph Nason had received several patents for hot water and steam heating in 1841 which places San Galli’s claim as the inventor into dispute. Our panel was immediately recognizable as a period piece and the cartoon sentence informs us that a plumber has just finished installing a new radiator. ![]() ![]() We didn’t have any new words appearing in the puzzle last week so hopefully we’ll get a crack at a few more before we wrap up the 45th week of the year. TOOPH needed a couple of extra glances before coming into view so it’ll be my pick for the most difficult anagram of the day.
